A
Splendid Rose - for Carolyn
You
thanked me just for listening, the day you got the news,
You must’ve been downhearted, you must’ve been confused.
We spent that night together and we shared a lot of tears,
I wanted just to comfort you, to cast away your fears.
You
thanked me when I told you everything would be okay,
As I stood right there beside you and they rolled your bed away.
Minutes seemed like hours when I finally got the word,
The feat had been successful, the growth had been deterred.
You
thanked me for the music box I bought to make you smile,
And you told me what it meant to you that I had stayed awhile.
And as you lay recovering, I wondered if you’d see,
The courage I was seeing, if you were watching me.
You
thanked me for the special way I held your hand that day,
They filled you with that miracle that would keep the growth at bay.
You could’ve been downhearted, you could’ve been forlorn,
But you told me you are just a rose, and each must have a thorn.
And now
that it’s behind us and you’ve thanked me endlessly,
I wanted you to understand --- the grateful one is me.
It was me you wanted near you, my hand the one you chose,
And few other hands have known the touch of such a
splendid
rose.
