Closing Time

Another day has started, with hardly any sleep
With sadness and with problems and secrets she must keep
Pulling up the blanket now to shield the morning light
Tries to hide the feelings of regret with deep contrite

And once again in prayer she pleads, today will be the day
She will not use a bottle, to wash her cares away
She knows she has a problem, she knows it's gone too far
She wonders if they'll miss her now down at the local bar

Another day of work is gone, she thinks of going home
Oh how she doesn't want to spend another night alone
Once again she tells herself, this doesn't seem so wrong
And so she'll drink the night away to melancholy song

Soon the night was over, and the music had stopped playing
People were not talking and the couples had stopped swaying
And then it was that someone came and sat down by her side
He'd watched her with great sadness, watched her as she cried

He told her he had seen her every night in this same place
And he couldn't help but notice the expression on her face
Then he told her something, was exactly what she needed
She listened with great interest as he quietly proceeded

He said, there was a gal like you, she came here every night
But this time it was different, something wasn't right
Drinking more than usual, she sat as in a trance
I never would've let her leave, if given one more chance
I didn't say a word instead, she staggered out that door
Just like she did at 2 a.m. so many nights before
And now inscribed upon a stone just miles outside of town
"Closing time came early, she's ordered her last round"

And as the rain was pouring down she started walking home
She couldn't bear to think about her name upon a stone
She thought about the story several times each passing day
And how this stranger turned her life from hopeless disarray

So one night she decided she must go and see this stranger
And let him know she's grateful for the way his story changed her
She looked around the darkness, she looked at every chair
And couldn't seem to find him, he wasn't anywhere

And so she started asking, has anyone at all
Seen the man that sat here with me, does anyone recall?
The guy behind the counter said "Ma'am, are you alright?
There was nobody sitting there right next to you that night"

And as she turned to leave that day she looked back in despair
She thought she saw an angel sitting right there in that chair
He said to her "Remember" ... with his gentle loving voice
"Closing Time's the motive of a heart that's made a choice"
