Love's Charade

Truth has finally found her, and chance can find it’s rest
A love has been exhausted, a heart has done it’s best
Resisting the confession, yet unwilling to pretend
A union meant forever, now waits to know it’s end

She knows he never loved her, the way she’d wished he would
But yet she gave completely, she gave him all she could
For years she would accommodate the promise that they made
They played their roles with dignity, their part in love’s charade

She never thought to criticize, she never tried to shame
Each heart will love in different ways, and no one is to blame
Enduring possibilities, she thought his heart would grow
To love her in that special way she'd always yearned to know

But hearts cannot be forced to love, they can’t be forced to feel
Loving takes no effort if the sentiment is real
Vows can't last forever, not when they're make believe
A heart was made not just to give, but also to receive
