Pride And Joy

A young man out of High School, but still her little boy
The only child she'd ever have, a mother's pride and joy
Today he boards the airplane, with all the other men
With promises to write her just as often as he can

And the letters started coming, he wrote just like he told her
Each letter filled with happenings, the stories of a soldier
And everyone he ended, "Mother, though I'm far away
All my love is with you, til we meet again someday"

She went into his room each day and looked inside each frame
The pictures told a story of the man that he became
She dusted all the trophies and she sat down on his bed
And added one more letter to the ones that she had read

For weeks she had been waiting, and watching at the door
Wanting one more letter to tuck safely in the drawer
She struggled to be positive, she knew she must be strong
But a mother's heart will always know
When something has gone wrong

And finally the day arrived another letter came
But this one wasn't from her son, she didn't know this name
It read "Ma'am I'm enclosing, this letter that was found
Tightly held inside his hand as he laid there on the ground"

The letter said Dear Mother, I'm traveling somewhere
I don't think I can send you any letters from up there
But someday we'll be together in a place that's far away
All my love is with you, til we meet again someday
