The Purchase Of A Heart

Walking through the mall one day, I saw a little boy,
A glowing smile across his face, concealing not his joy.
His mother pushed that wheelchair at a gentle even pace,
As happiness was beaming on her lovely tender face.

Mesmerized, I watched them as she found a bench to rest,
And she turned the boy to face her and she loosened up his vest.
He stared at her with loving eyes, she smiled and kissed his hand,
In awe I watched them closely, I just couldn’t understand.

Standing there I studied them, my mind began to stray,
My children were born healthy, did I smile at them this way?
When they looked upon my face, did this tenderness they see?
Would bitterness control me if that boy was born to me?

The two of them just sat there as quietly she spoke,
Oblivious to passers by, and those that would provoke.
His arms were flapping wildly and I thought about the trial,
But no matter what the incident, she answered with a smile.

I didn’t even buy that day, what I’d been searching for,
Instead I left with something you can’t buy in any store.
When trials seem unbearable and life seems so unfair,
Send your heart out shopping for a little boy’s wheelchair.

This poem is dedicated to JacDaniels and her son Jacob,
from whom my heart received the inspiration to write this poem.
I am fortunate to have crossed paths with such a wonderful
woman and mother.  This is for you, Jac, with love.
