I've learned that there are reasons for the words a person speaks
And I know at times it's difficult to turn the other cheek
Hurtful things we don't deserve can bring our spirits down
Let not your smile be hidden or be turned into a frown

It makes me wonder, makes me pause
What has happened, what's the cause?

Perhaps there is an illness, a heart that's just been broken
Guiding their demeanor and words that have been spoken
Guard your gentle spirit, just tell them "it's okay"
Tender them a smile and then be on about your way

Ponder not excuses, but know that there are reasons
For just as nature changes, hearts will go through seasons
It doesn't mean you're passive, it doesn't mean they're bad
But words are just reflections of a heart that's feeling sad

Bitterness will search for you
When something harsh is said
Consider there are reasons
And understand ...

Instead
