Sweet 16

It was only sixteen years ago, you came into my world
I know that I had never seen a more precious baby girl
I looked into that lovely face and suddenly I knew
There could never be a greater love than what I felt for you

And time began to pass so fast, and soon was your first word
The cutest little voice I think that I have ever heard
Every little move you made, so gentle and so sweet
I never thought that you would make my life seem so complete

So little time had passed before a 5 was on your cake
And soon I dropped you off at school; my heart began to ache
You didn't see the tears I cried, in letting your hand go
I knew someday you'd understand I had to let you grow

One by one the summers passed, how beautifully you'd grown
Once being with you endlessly, you now needed time alone
And even though I missed you and time you spent with me
I just stood back and watched you, and then you were 13

And today I will be placing 16 candles on your cake
And once again I'll wonder 'bout the wish that you make
Hoping that your heart believes that wishes do come true
For once I made a wish for love, and I was given you
