The Most Important Lesson

Proverbs 29:23
A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

I went to church each Sunday, read the Bible every day
I took the time to worship, took the time to pray
And soon I got to thinking that I somehow was exempt
And others I could criticize with sureness and contempt

It brought me so much comfort, for here I was so strong
Because I was a Christian, and I knew right from wrong
My heart was safely guarded, as if inside a wall
That nothing in this lifetime could penetrate at all

And then as I grew older, the trials came each day
And you know that wall that I had built? It started to give way
And so I went to Jesus, and He said to me, my child ...
You had not learned compassion, so I had to teach you how

So now it is I offer this invaluable suggestion
A message from a heart that's learned a most important lesson
Before you cast a judgment you must try to understand
Things may not always happen in your life as you have planned

And someday you might find yourself to be like someone who
Suffered from the heartbreak of the words once said by you
So before you cast a judgment, just ask yourself, I plea
How would I react if the same thing happened to me?

What if that happened to me?
