While reading just the other day about our days gone by
It told about an era that I wish I could deny
I thought about the hardships as I read with much chagrin
Of people that were hated just because of darker skin

I found myself imagining how futile it would seem
To live a life with dignity when stripped of self esteem
People of one country, yet living separated
Merciless before the ones of bigotry and hatred

As most of us reflect upon that era with great shame
I ask you to remember, we are not the ones to blame
And though there's talk of payback there can never be a way
To change the course of history, or relive yesterday

And though we cannot modify the writing in the books
Maybe we can learn from it and take another look
If we really search inside ourselves, I know you will agree
There is no place, to hate for race, 'cept in our history
