Too Late
It started out so beautiful, in every
single way
She loved him with completeness, through each and every day
For they would be a family, the way she'd always dreamed
But as the years were passing, things weren't as they seemed
Soon it was she realized, the love was not the same
She wondered how it happened, this couple they became
His words no longer tender, his touch, not a
caress
In spite of that she carried on and loved him nonetheless
And thoughts of how she failed him, she tried to understand
The bruises on her body wasn't something that she'd planned
And each time he apologized and promised he would
never
Strike at her with rage again or hurt her whatsoever
But vows, they are forever, she endured the passing
years
Throughout the many instances of aching and of tears
And now the doctors contemplate a woman's pending death
And all the family gathers round, awaiting her last breath
And they who loved and honored her,
were standing by her side
To watch her drift into a place where no more tears are cried
As somewhere else a husband thinks 'bout how he'd let her down
And that her last request was, she did not want him around
And as he sits alone somewhere he's
overwhelmed with sorrow
Too late to say I'm sorry, there will be no more tomorrows
And as her final heartbeat comes those memories are gone
But for a lonely man somewhere, left behind to linger on
